About This Program

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree specializing in Social Studies presents coursework and field experiences focused on history, geography, government, societal issues, and the ability to teach this content to others. All educators play an important role in shaping the minds of citizens at any age, but it is the primary focus of a social studies educator. By helping others explore their history and the cultures around them, the social studies bring the world into learning environments that can facilitate learning for diverse audiences.

All Salem teacher education programs are delivered in a blended instructional format (on ground and online) with school-based fieldwork that leads to licensure to teach in America’s schools. The Salem School of Education is nationally accredited through the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation’s NCATE legacy process.

Course Format

Salem offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study with continuous enrollment via distance education or on ground at our Salem, West Virginia campus. Courses are delivered in a monthly format (4-weeks) and completed on ground, online, or through a blended approach that uses both delivery methods. Online courses are structured to work within the constraints of full- time employment, allowing you to earn your degree with minimum disruption to your busy schedule. Traditional on ground programs of study are available for campus residents and commuter students.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Salem is open to all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, or ability/disability. Anyone wishing to attend Salem can obtain the necessary application from the Office of Admissions or online from our website at The completed application should be submitted to the Office of Admissions at the earliest possible date. The University admits students on a rolling, monthly start basis. Acceptance is within the discretion of Salem University.

Students who specifically seek to earn the Bachelor of Science in Education degree are accepted to the university as education majors. To enter the Salem teacher education program, education majors must undergo a portfolio evaluation and interview. Successful completion of this Level I Review (the first of a three-level review process across the program) is required for formal admission into the teacher education program. To qualify for the Level 1 Review education majors must:

  • Complete 24-36 hours of coursework, including EDU101, SPE120, or EDU272
  • Earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 in content courses, in the professional educator core courses, and overall
  • Meet the required passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (CORE)
  • Pass a criminal background check
