Commencement Speaker for SIU Commencement 2011

Mr. James E. Goodwin, a 1967 graduate of Salem College, will be the speaker for Salem International University’s 2011 Commencement. Mr. Goodwin holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Salem College. He also has did post-graduate work at Northern Illinois University. He retired as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of UAL Corporation and United Airlines on October 31, 2001 after a career of almost 35 years.

During that period of time, Mr. Goodwin had the opportunity to work in almost every facet of the airline industry. Starting as an accountant and management trainee, he worked his way through several financial departments before entering the sales and services side of the business. He was elected an officer of United Airlines in May of 1979.

In 1985, he was selected Senior Vice President-Marketing, with responsibility for branding and pricing as well as traditional marketing activities of sales and advertising. In 1988, he was selected Senior Vice President-Services, with responsibility for the design and delivery of all in-flight and ground services. In 1991, he was selected Senior Vice President-Maintenance Operations with overall responsibility for the safe and reliable operation of United’s entire Fleet of Aircraft, including engineering, quality control as well as maintenance, repair and overhaul.

In 1992, he was selected to be Senior Vice President-International with full profit responsibilities for operations in Asia, South Pacific, Latin American and Europe. In 1995, he was selected to be Senior Vice President-North America with full profit responsibility for all domestic operations. In 1998, he was selected President and Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for all operational groups including Flight, Maintenance, Onboard, as well as the key product markets of North America, International, Shuttle and Cargo. In March 1999, Mr. Goodwin was elected Chairman and CEO of UAL Corporation and United Airlines.

Mr. Goodwin is the Non Executive Chairman of the Board of Federal Signal Corporation. He serves on the Boards of Directors of AAR Corp, First Chicago Bank Corporation, and J B Technologies. He is on the Advisory Board of Hu-Friedy Corp and the Board of Trustees of Lewis University. He is a member of The Council of Retired Chief Executives.

Mr. Goodwin and his wife, Ann, have two children and five grandchildren.

Commencement 2011

Commencement 2011 will be held on April 30, 2011 at 2:00 pm. in the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium. Commencement speaker is James E. Goodwin, a 1967 graduate of Salem College. Mr. Goodwin served as interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes from December 2007 through September 15, 2008. Prior to that, he was an independent business consultant from October 2001 to December 2007. From July 1999 to October 2001, Mr. Goodwin served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of United Airlines, a worldwide airline operator (NASDAQ: UAUA). Mr. Goodwin also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of AAR Corp., a manufacturer of products for the aviation/aerospace industry; John Bean Technologies Corporation, a manufacturer of industrial equipment for the food processing and air transportation industries; and First Chicago Bank & Trust, serving in such positions since April 2002, September 2008, and May 2002, respectively.

  • Friday April 29th - 5:00 PM: Honor's Reception
  • Friday April 29th - 6:30 PM: Open House at the Randolph House
  • Saturday, April 30th - 11:00 AM: Commencement Brunch
  • Saturday April 30th - 2:00 PM: Commencement
  • Reception - Immediately following Commencement

Green and White Newspaper

The Green and White Newspaper is back and ready to bring students news and information from across campus. In addition, the Green and White will feature an Alumni Section to keep alumni connected. The intent is to publish the newspaper once a month. However, we need YOUR help! If you see, hear or experience something interesting, please let us know - current students and alumni alike! Walt Pinkham (1973)

Walt Pinkham, currently living in Albion Michigan graduated from Salem in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in Human Relations. He has been married 39 years to the former Joni Schneider, who also was a Human Relations student at Salem.  Walt received his masters degree from the University of Michigan and has spent the majority of his career working as a school social worker for special needs students.  He has four grown children and seven grandchildren.

John Wynne (1972)

John is married with five children and two grandchildren, and lives in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. John currently serves as Vice- President of House Operations, Radio City Music Hall. The Music Hall is owned and operated by the Madison Square Garden Company which also owns and operates the following:

  • Madison Square Garden
  • The New York Knickerbockers (Basketball)
  • The New York Liberty (Women’s Basketball)
  • The New York Rangers (Hockey)
  • Radio City Music Hall,  the Rockettes brand and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular
  • The Beacon Theater (NYC)
  • The Chicago Theater (Illinois)
  • The Citi Wang Theater (Boston)
  • 2 Television Networks (MSG & Fuse)

John has been involved with this entertainment and sports company for 24 years.   Prior to coming to Radio City,  he was the Director of Event Coordination for Giants Stadium (Giants & Jets home stadium) and the Meadowlands Arena (former home of the Nets and Devils), where he was employed from 1976 until 1988.

Richard "Rick" Barnhouse (1978)

Richard "Rick" Barnhouse, 1978, is currently in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. He is married to Jana Barnhouse and they have two children - Leah, 19 and Aaron, 12. Rick is principal at International Schools Group - Dammam, Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the districts' largest school. It is a nursery through grade 12 school. His email address is rbarnhouse@isgdh.org.

Susan Kirby (1997)

Susan Kirby, 1997, recently published her book, titled My Photo Book: Greetings from Salem, West Virginia: a Private Collection of Images at Lulu.com. The book features images of Salem from the 1900's to present day. Miss Kirby resides in Elizabeth, West Virginia.
