BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Salem International University will aim to make the program’s first appearance in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship title contest as the Fighting Tigers release the program’s 2013 men’s water polo schedule of games.
The team will open the season on Saturday-Sunday, September 7-8, at the United States Naval Academy’s Navy Open in Annapolis, Md. before continuing play at the Bucknell University Bison Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, September 14-15, in Lewisburg, Pa.
Southern Division-West Region action commences on Saturday, September 21, at Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pa. and Mercyhurst University in North East, Pa. before continuing with a neutral site contest versus Gannon University at Penn State Behrend on Sunday, September 22.
The Tigers will play their first games of the year in Salem, W.Va. on Saturday-Sunday, September 28-29, against first-year varsity program Monmouth College and Notre Dame College (September 28) before wrapping up the conference regular season against Washington & Jefferson College (September 29).
Following a non-conference game at Notre Dame in South Euclid, Ohio on Friday, October 4, the Tigers will square-off with Gannon, Washington & Jefferson, Notre Dame, Mercyhurst and Penn State Behrend in the non-conference Doc Hunkler Shootout on Saturday-Sunday, October 12-13.
On October 12, the Tigers will trek to the campus of Penn State Behrend for games against the host Behrend Lions and Gannon. A day later, the team will move South in Pennsylvania to the campus of Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. to wrap-up the Hunkler Shootout against the host Presidents and Mercyhurst on Sunday, October 13.
A week later, Salem International will go back to Notre Dame’s campus in South Euclid, Ohio for the CWPA Division II Championship, formerly known as the CWPA Division II Eastern Championship, on Saturday-Sunday, October 19-20, against the Falcons, Gannon and Mercyhurst. The Tigers will aim to appear in the Division II Championship game for the first time since knocking off Mercyhurst in 2004.
The results of the regular season will set the field for the Southern Division Championship on Friday-Sunday, November 8-10, at Navy in a 20-game tournament against Bucknell University, Gannon, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, Mercyhurst, Monmouth, Notre Dame, Penn State Behrend, Princeton University, Washington & Jefferson and the host Midshipmen to decide which program is the 2013 division champion.
Seeding for the championship will be completed by comparing all 12-teams from the Southern Division’s East and West Regions based on their regular season meetings to set the No. 1-to-12 positions in the field.
A Top Five mark at the Southern Division championship will guarantee SIU a spot at the CWPA Championship on November 22-24 at Brown University in Providence, R.I. If the Tigers do not finish among the Top Five teams at the Southern Division Championship, the squad will still have a chance to advance to the tournament as the remaining four positions, after the Top Three finishing programs from the Northern Division and the Top Five from the Southern Division, will be filled by at-large selections.
