Our courses teach topics including:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Principles of pharmacology
- Nursing considerations for specific populations, such as mental health and geriatric patients
- Practical skills, e.g. how to draw blood or prepare samples
- Dietary and nutritional considerations
Earning your LPN takes one year. Your courses will take place on campus in West Virginia with extensive laboratory and clinical experience work. After you graduate, you will need to take and pass the NCLEX-PN examination in order to gain licensure to practice.
Objectives of This Program
The goal of the Certificate in Licensed Practical Nursing is to produce graduates who are ready to perform entry-level nursing duties, demonstrating appropriate clinical knowledge, patient service, and ethical integrity.
We provide quality training and hands-on experience through classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, and clinical training. In addition, we prepare students for the NCLEX-PN licensure examination before graduation.
When you earn your LPN certificate with us, you’ll be prepared pursue entry-level nursing roles with:
- Nursing homes
- Long-term care or rehabilitation facilities
- Outpatient clinics
- Home nursing agencies
As an LPN graduate, you will work under the supervision of Registered Nurses, physicians, and other health care practitioners, performing duties such as:
- Taking medical histories and vital signs
- Collecting specimens from patients for laboratory tests
- Helping patients with eating and bathing
Please note: Qualification for licensure depends on your passing the NCLEX-PN and other factors, depending upon which state you plan to practice in.
Program of Study
In our program, you’ll learn important health science concepts, plus clinical skills at a basic level. To earn your LPN with us, you’ll complete 1,352 instructional hours, divided into 704 clinical hours and 648 classroom and lab hours.

It takes three consecutive academic semesters of 12 semester credit hours each or 3 credit hours per month to complete the program—about one calendar year.

LPN102 – Fundamentals of Practical Nursing 1 (3 Credits); LPN103 – Fundamentals of Practical Nursing 2 (3 Credits)
This two-course sequence introduces the student to the study of the nursing process as it relates to meeting basic human needs of individuals in all age groups. Emphasis is placed upon principles of nursing care, performance of safe nursing measures, development of observational skills, and recording. Communication methods and nurse-patient relationships, health and health care organizations, and the role of the practical nurse as a member of the health care team are explored.
LPN104 – Pharmacology, Medication Math & Nutrition (3 Credits)
Part A: Pharmacology and Medication Math. This segment introduces information concerning sources, effects, legalities, and the safe use of medications as therapeutic agents. Emphasis is placed on nursing responsibility, accountability, and application of the nursing process regarding drug therapy. Upon completion, students should be able to compute dosages and administer medication safely. Pharmacological properties of medications in each classification are emphasized.
Part B: Nutrition and Diet Therapy. This segment provides a foundation in the basic principles and concepts of good nutrition. Various nutritional disorders and related diseases are discussed. Special diets ordered by health care providers and nursing implications are included.
Part C: Professional Communication. This segment helps students in the health professions transition into “real world” that requires professional writing and communications. This course introduces the elements of medical terminology. Emphasis is placed on building familiarity with medical words through knowledge of roots, prefixes, and suffixes. The course exposes students to strategies particular to the health professions in order to produce professional documents, including cover letters, resumes, personal statements, and review articles. The concepts of effective communication and the basic principles of teaching/learning are explored.
LPN105 – Medical-Surgical Practical Nursing 1 (3 Credits); LPN106 – Medical-Surgical Practical Nursing 2 (3 Credits); LPN107 – Medical-Surgical Practical Nursing 3 (3 Credits)
This three-part series of courses presents students with the pathophysiology of common diseases of the adult patient that will be encountered in nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on providing care within the framework of the nursing process and evidence-based practice. The presentation of diseases is organized according to the body systems and physiological needs with emphasis on caring, integrity, diverse and excellence of care.
LPN108 – Nursing Care of Older Adults (3 Credits)
This course provides an opportunity to utilize the provider of care and manager of care roles to meet nursing needs of older adults in a variety of settings. Emphasis is placed on the aging process as it applies to normal developmental changes and alterations in health commonly occurring in the older adult. Upon completion, students should be able to apply the nursing process and consider evidence-based practice in caring for the older adult from diverse backgrounds with integrity and excellence.
LPN109 – Mental Health Nursing (3 Credits)
This course includes concepts related to the nursing care of individuals experiencing alterations in social and psychological functioning. Emphasis is placed on utilizing the nursing process to provide and manage nursing care for individuals with common psychiatric disorders or mental health needs. Upon completion, students should be able to apply psychosocial theories in the nursing care of individuals with psychiatric/mental health needs. Therapeutic use of self, utilization of effective communication techniques and the role of the nurse in providing client care in health care settings is emphasized.
LPN110 – Nursing Care of the Family (3 Credits)
Part A: Obstetrics. This course introduces nursing concepts related to the delivery of nursing care for the expanding family. Emphasis is placed on utilizing the nursing process as a framework for managing/providing nursing care to individuals and families along the wellness-illness continuum. Upon completion, students should be able to utilize the nursing process to deliver nursing care to mothers, infants, and family.
Part B: Pediatrics. This course introduces nursing concepts related to the delivery of nursing care for the pediatric client and family. Emphasis is placed on utilizing the nursing process and evidence-based practice as a framework for managing/providing nursing care child health along the wellness-illness continuum. Upon completion, students should be able to apply the nursing process in caring for the pediatric clients from diverse backgrounds with integrity and excellence.
LPN111 – Advanced Medical-Surgical Practical Nursing (3 Credits)
This course provides expanded concepts related to nursing care for individuals from diverse cultures experiencing common complex alterations in health. Students have the opportunity to observe critical care/specialty care settings. Emphasis is placed on the nurse’s role as a member of a multidisciplinary team and as a manager of care for a group of individuals. Upon completion, students should be able to provide comprehensive nursing care for groups of individuals with common complex alterations in health based on evidence-based care.
LPN112 – Practice, Issues and Trends (3 Credits)
This course is a study of nursing – past, present, and future. Legal, ethical, and political responsibilities and issues are included. The role of governing boards and nursing organizations as they relate to practical nursing is covered. Strategies for coping with conflict and stress as a new graduate will be explored. Roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse are discussed which include professionalism, communication, delegation, leadership, organization, time management, and critical, creative and reflective thinking. Students learn how to prepare for and take the NCLEX-PN examination.
Overview of Admission Requirements
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- High school graduate or equivalent (such as a GED or international secondary institution);
- Complete an entrance interview, including verification of health insurance, immunizations, criminal background check, and a drug screening.
High school transcripts (and/or college transcripts for transfer students) must be provided before the end of the first semester of study. International students will need to provide results of credential evaluation and English language capability. Please see the application page for more details.
