Physiology and Exercise Science Specialization
The goal of the Physiology and Exercise Science concentration is to extend and apply your knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to practical settings. You should graduate with the skills you need to pursue a variety of career opportunities in research or continue to graduate or professional study in an exercise science-related field.
About This Program
Students interested in pursuing careers in exercise science or rehabilitation can establish a foundation of scientific knowledge and technical skills with Salem International University. Our BS in Biology degree with a concentration in Physiology and Exercise Science can help you prepare for entry-level career opportunities or graduate-level study.
This concentration program is part of our 40-month, 120-credit Bachelor of Science in Biology degree program, and is only available at our West Virginia campus.
You’ll be prepared to pursue entry-level career opportunities in:
- Health care
- Athletic training
- Athletic coaching
This program’s main focus is to prepare you for further professional study in an exercise science-related field.
Program of Study
The Physiology and Exercise Science concentration builds on the general knowledge and laboratory science covered in the Bachelor of Science in Biology degree program. It includes five additional courses with in-depth study of issues related to exercise science:
- BIO260 Kinesiology & Biomechanics
- BIO365 Physiology of Exercise & Performance Assessment
- BIO442 Microbiology
- BIO444 Pathophysiology
- BIO460 Advanced Topics in Human Nutrition
SIU offers the Bachelor of Science in Biology on campus in West Virginia. We offer you:
- A professionally-focused curriculum and accelerated course sequence
- Experienced faculty who support your goals
- A diverse learning community
- Comprehensive preparation for graduate-level study in life sciences or the job market
BIO260 – Kinesiology/Biomechanics (3 Credits)
This course is designed to link the basics of skeletal structure, anatomy, the motor learning components of the central nervous system, and skeletal muscle function, to basic Newtonian mechanics and general force-velocity physics. Special emphasis is the application of this information to real-life situations.
BIO365 – Physiology of Exercise and Performance Assessment (3 Credits)
The study of the physiological changes accompanying acute and chronic exercise. Lecture and laboratory experiences are planned to enable the student to develop, administer, and evaluate physiological tests and prescribe exercise-training procedures. This is intended to emphasize application-specific content.
BIO442 – Microbiology (3 Credits)
Studies prokaryotic and eukaryotic micro-organisms and their viruses. Emphasis will be on culture techniques and the principles of identification. Topics include the engineering and utilization of microorganisms as related to the immune system.
BIO444 – Pathophysiology (3 Credits)
Using the fundamental concepts of anatomy and physiology of cellular function and structure, tissues, organs, and organ systems. This course explores the altered regulatory mechanisms associated with disease. Topics center on the associated diseases involving the circulatory, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and metabolism, hematological and immunological systems, neuromuscular, and renal systems.
BIO460 – Advanced Topics in Human Nutrition (3 Credits)
This advanced course will provide a thorough examination of the interrelationships between nutrition (nutrient intake and availability) and physiology, biochemistry, and metabolism. The level of emphasis will be that of the molecule and the cell.
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- High school graduate or equivalent (such as a GED or international secondary institution).
High school transcripts (and/or college transcripts for transfer students) must be provided before the end of the first semester of study. International students will need to provide results of credential evaluation and English language capability.
