Bachelor of Science in Business Administration – Health Care Management Specialization

The United States spends 18% of its annual gross domestic product on health care—much more than any other nation, according to the World Bank.i This industry makes up a critical part of American infrastructure. In addition to doctors, nurses, and surgeons, the health care industry needs administrators and managers who can manage resources, keep costs low, and help support high- quality patient care.

Prepare for health care administration careers with Salem International University. You can add a Health Care Management concentration to your BSBA program and develop in-depth knowledge of the health care industry’s financial and operational needs.

This concentration program is part of our Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The degree is available online or on campus, and takes as little as 40 months to complete.

Objectives of This Program

The Health Care Management concentration consists of five upper-level courses that offer you insight into topics including:

  • Laws, regulations, and government oversight within health care
  • Budgeting and investment for health care organizations
  • For-profit, non-profit, and government-sponsored delivery systems
  • Comparisons of delivery systems in other nations

After graduation, you should be prepared to provide support to organizations that offer direct patient care, provide insurance, or develop treatments.

Program of Study

The concentration in health care management builds on the general knowledge, international focus, and core business curriculum of our BSBA program with five targeted courses:

  • MGT212 Introduction to Health Care Management
  • MGT225 Legal Aspects of Health Care Management
  • MGT222 Human Resources Management
  • MGT310 Economics & Health Care Finance
  • MGT426 International Issues & Trends in Health Care Management

These upper-level courses are taken during the last two years of your degree program.

Course Descriptions

MGT212 – Introduction to Heath Care Management (3 Credits)
This course provides an introduction to health care management, including planning, evaluation, budgeting, marketing, government and regulatory oversight, and managing change.

MGT222 – Human Resources Management (3 Credits)
A study of the principles and techniques of manpower management in organizations; controversies and processes of interaction among labor, management, government, and the public; labor law; and the collective bargaining process. In-depth study of manpower management in organizations. Case studies are used.

MGT225 – Legal Aspects of Health Care Management (3 Credits)
This course provides an examination of the laws and regulations that govern health care facilities and programs. Topics include privacy, rights, protections, and liability.

MGT310 – Economics & Health Care Finance (3 Credits)
This course covers economics, accounting, and finance principles applied to health care. Topics include budgeting, capital expenditures, and evaluating the effectiveness of investments in terms of quality of health care delivery and financial returns.

MGT426 – International Issues & Trends in Health Care Management (3 Credits)
This course examines emerging global issues in health care. Topics include comparisons of international delivery systems, differential patient outcomes and quality, privacy, public health, and multicultural considerations.

Overview of Admission Requirements

Anyone who wishes to apply to our Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • High school graduate or equivalent (such as a GED or international secondary institution).

High school transcripts (and/or college transcripts for transfer students) must be provided before the end of the first semester of study. International students will need to provide results of credential evaluation and English language capability.
