Scholarship Opportunities


Salem International University offers a variety of scholarships to students for those who qualify.

1. Undergraduate (alumni) – return to enroll in a Graduate degree program effective 12/1/13. Click here to read more.

  • Amount of Scholarship:  $3,000 per term.
  • Eligible candidates to be recommended by Scholarship Committee.
  • This scholarship is available on a first come first served basis.  Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for one term. To qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the term with a 3.0 GPA average.

2. Graduate (alumni) - return to enroll in another Graduate degree program effective 12/1/13. Click here to read more.

  • Amount of Scholarship:  $3,000 per term.
  • Eligible candidates to be recommended by Scholarship Committee.
  • This scholarship is available on a first come first served basis.  Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for one term. To qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the term with a 3.0 GPA average

3. Associate Degree (alumni), can return to complete their BS degree effective 12/1/13. Click here to read more.

  • Amount of Scholarship:  $2,000 per term.
  • Earned Associate Degree from SIU prior to January 2014
  • Eligible candidates to be recommended by Scholarship Committee.
  • This scholarship is available on a first come first served basis.  Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for one term. To qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the prior term with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

4. West Virginia residents who qualify for the Promise Scholarship qualify at Salem International University for a $3,000 per term academic scholarship ($6,000 annual award) Effective 8/1/14. Click here to read more.

  • Amount of Scholarship:  $3,000 per term.
  • Available to West Virginia residents who meet the Promise Scholarship criteria.
  • Eligible candidates to be recommended by Scholarship Committee.
  • This scholarship is available on a first come first served basis.  Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for one term. To qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the prior term with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

  • New online students can apply for an Online Scholarship with a start date on or after 8/1/14
  • Amount of Scholarship: $1,500 per term for 2.0-2.59 GPA or $3,000 per term for 2.6 or higher GPA.
  • Official HS or College transcript must be received prior to start of classes and submitted with scholarship application
  • Eligible candidates to be recommended by Scholarship Committee
  • This scholarship is available on a first come first served basis.  Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for one term.  To qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the prior term with a minimum GPA of 2.3 or 2.6 respectively for Undergraduate and 3.0 for Graduate students.

6. M.Ed Degree and M.Ed Certificate Scholarship  Click here to read more.

  • New students pursing an M.Ed Degree or an M.Ed Certificate can apply for this scholarship if their start date is on or after 4/28/14
  • Amount of Scholarship:  $2,000 per term
  • This scholarship is available on a first come first served basis.  Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for additional terms.  To qualify for the term(s), the student must have successfully completed the term with a 3.0 GPA average
  • Upon student nearing graduation from the program, if there is not a full semester (12 credit hours) of courses remaining the scholarship will be prorated on a $500/per course basis

7. Employer Reimbursement Matching Scholarship  Click here to read more.

  • New students that start on or after 5/27/14 can apply for the employer reimbursement matching scholarship if they are eligible for tuition reimbursement through their employer
  • Amount of Scholarship: Up to $5,250 per calendar year
  • Must provide necessary paperwork from employer regarding tuition reimbursement program

    Students who withdrew and their last day of attendance was between January 2009 and December 31, 2012,  can return to school and earn their Master or Bachelor degree who had a minimum GPA of 2.5 or above for Undergraduate, and  3.0 or above for Graduate programs prior to their withdrawal.

  • Amount of Scholarship:  $2,000 per term for Undergraduates and $3,000 per term for Master’s students.
  • Eligible candidates to be recommended by Scholarship Committee.
  • Original award is good for one term, with the potential of being automatically renewed for one term. For Graduate students to qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the returning term with a 3.0 GPA. For Undergraduate students to qualify for the one additional term, the student must have successfully completed the prior term with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

9. President’s Honor Scholarship  Click here to read more.

  • New students that start on or after 8/4/2014 can apply for the President’s Honor Scholarship
  • Must be a new student to SIU and have an official HS transcript or college transcript (minimum of 24 credit hours earned) with a minimum GPA of 3.75
  • New students that started on or after 8/4/14 will be eligible to renew the scholarship each semester if their cumulative GPA is at or above 3.75.  If a student’s cumulative GPA falls below 3.75 at the end of a semester the student is no longer eligible for this scholarship
  • Amount of scholarship: $5,000/semester

  • New undergraduate students that start on or after 8/4/2014 can apply for the President’s merit scholarship
  • Amount of scholarship per semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or greater:

Total Scholarship for 4 year program                          $13,750

  • First year of scholarship will be based on first year cumulative GPA from course work completed at Salem International University.  After completion of the first year all awards will be assessed at the completion of each semester thereafter
  • If a student’s cumulative GPA falls below 3.3 at the end of any semester after the start of their second year, the student is no longer eligible for this scholarship and is not eligible to apply for any other academic scholarship

  • Continuing students with a GPA of 3.0 or greater are eligible to apply for the scholarship if they have not received a stipend from SIU for a current or past semester of attendance
  • Award will be based on financial need for current and future semester charges only, as determined on the award letter
  • Award will be up to $2,000/semester

12. Military Scholarship  Click here to read more.

  • New students that start on or after 8/4/2014 can apply for the military scholarship
  • Award will be decided based on active duty, reservist, national guard, retiree, or veteran status (validation of those statuses will be required by collecting a copy of the DD214 or an active military ID) – dishonorably discharged veterans are not eligible
  • Amount of scholarship: $340 per credit hour undergraduate students

Below terms apply to all students:

  1. University reserves the right to change scholarship offerings without notice at any time.
  2. Student must enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours for each term. If a student is unable to attend 12 hours in a semester due to transfer credits (course availability) the scholarship will be awarded after the completion of 12 hours.  A candidate that withdraws within a term for any reason other than course availability due to transfer credits will forfeit the scholarship for that respective term and will not be considered in the future for a Scholarship.  Student is responsible for all financial obligations to the school.
  3. All Scholarships are posted to student ledgers at the end of the completion of each successful term if a stipend has not been paid.
  4. Scholarships will be for tuition only, cannot be used for stipend purposes.  Students that request stipends forfeit any current or future scholarship disbursements.
  5. Students can only receive one non-athletic SIU Scholarship at a time excluding the military scholarship.
  6. Students must be in good financial standing with the institution to receive their award(s).
  7. Students that are in default on title IV student loans are not eligible to receive any scholarships other than the Employer Reimbursement Matching Scholarship.
  8. All Scholarship awards recommended by the Scholarship Committee need to be approved and finalized by the President or VP of Financial Aid and Compliance.
  9. Application Deadlines:

First day of the term excluding the Employer Reimbursement Matching Scholarship.
