BUTLER, P.A. - Salem International University drop both ends of a doubleheader Sunday against Mercyhurst, falling 11-0 and 4-2. The Tigers drop to 2-12 on the season while Mercyhurst gets above .500 with a 9-7 record.
Myles Swartz (Thornhill, ONT, Canada) (0-3) took the loss for Salem, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Altavilla earned the win for Mercyhurst.
In the series finale, Salem trailed 4-0 before trying to rally. The Tigers scored twice in the fourth, highlighted by a Scott Schlapinski (St. Petersburg, FL) double to open up the inning and would advance to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. One out later, Alex Kurth (Halethorpe, MD) drew a walk and Joe Rufo (Lakeland, FL) drove in Schlapinski from third.
After Aaron Alderman (Lakeland, FL) reached on a rare Mercyhurst error, Tyler Beck (Rock Hall, MD) hit a bases loaded single to score Kurth. The rally was cut short in its prime however, as Rufo was called out at third and Hunter Bonner (Palm Harbor, FL) struck out to end the inning and deflate the Tigers.
Joshua Karlin (Cooksville, MD) was saddled with the loss (0-2). Delahoy picked up the win for the Lakers.
Salem is slated to host the University of California (PA) on Wednesday at Frank Loria Memorial Field in Clarksburg. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start. |
