PEPPER PIKE, O.H - The Salem International University women's basketball team went on the road for the final game of the 2012-13 season and couldn't quite pull out the victory, losing 69-66 to Ursuline College at the Matthey J. O'Brien Center.
Ursuline College jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Then over the next two minutes, the Lady Tigers went on an 11-2 run to take a 15-14 lead. Whitney McCargo (South Boston, VA) contributed a three and a lay up, while Ciera Simms (Bowie, MD) and Alicia Stebbins added two buckets apiece. Shakina Haggins (Lakeland, FL) converted on two free-throws during the run. From then on the two teams would battle until McCargo hit a three to give SIU a 38-36 advange at the half.
The teams would play a very even second half, with neither team leading by more than five points. The lead changed hands four times in the half with five ties. With 3:38 remaining, McCargo hit a jumper to tie the game at 59-59. After a bucket on the other end, Shakinah Haggins tied the game again with a layup with 2:37 on the clock. However, Ursuline followed up with a six to two run to take a 67-63 lead with 11 seconds on the clock. Inkera Patterson (Northwest, D.C.) answered with a three, but the Lady Tigers had to foul with only a second left on the clock.
Whitney McCargo scored 17 points to lead the SIU offense. Amanda Jackson (Dayton, OH) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while dishing out nine assists (also a game-high).
