SALEM, W.V. -The Salem International University women's basketball team celebrated breast cancer awareness and the "Play 4 Kay" initiative during the game against Daemen College this afternoon at the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium
The "Play 4 Kay" initiative is a national program supported by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association that attempts to raise awareness of breast cancer on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative.
The Lady Tigers kept the game close in the first half, tying the game up at nine apiece with 15:49 showing. The teams would trade buckets until a 6-0 run knotted up the game again at 17-17 with just 9:28 to go. However, the pace quickly changed and the Wildcats raced into halftime on a 24-6 run to get the distance they needed from what was proving to be a pesky SIU squad.
Inkera Patterson (Northwest, D.C) had 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting to lead the effort for Salem. Shakinah Haggins (Lakeland, FL) registered 10 rebounds.
