WHEELING, W.V. - Salem International University women's basketball team gave Wheeling Jesuit University all they could handle, trailing at the half 32-30 before running out of gas late in a 77-61 setback Monday afternoon in Wheeling, WV.
Salem went toe-to-toe with the Cardinals in the first half, forcing six (6) ties and 11 lead changes in the first half. However, Wheeling Jesuit would come out hot in the second half, forcing five SIU turnovers and hitting four out of the first six shots to switch the momentum for good.
Inkera Patterson (North West, D.C.) lead the Lady Tigers with 13 points. The Sophomore Guard has scored in double-figures six out of the last seven games. Shakinah Haggins (Lakeland, FL) had a breakout game for Salem, scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Her only other points of the season came when she scored four (4) points against King College on December 18th. For the game, the Lady Tigers shot a season high 48.1% (26-for-54) from the field. Salem led the rebounding category by a narrow 32-29 margin, which led to a 12-7 advantage in second chance points. SIU was 7-of-14 from the charity stripe, while Wheeling Jesuit was 16-of-21 from the line. Salem International returns to action on January 8th when they travel to Clarion (PA).
