Tiffin, OH - Salem International University landed three players on the NCAA Division II All-Independent teams, led by utility player Hayley Wilson (Lake Mary, FL).
"I'm very happy for all three honorees," said SIU Softball Coach Steve Potts. "It's great to have players that are nationally recognized. It shows the growth of our program."
Wilson, in her second season as a Lady Tiger, was named First Team All-ICAA (Independents' Collegiate Athletic Association). She led the teams in Hits (57), RBI's (49), Homers (11), Slugging Percentage (.665), tied the lead for Runs Scored (41), and also led in Total Bases (103). She also came in second on the team in Batting Average (.368). Her ability to hit the long-ball earned had her ranked 6th in all in of Division II in Home Runs Per Game and 73rd in Total Home Runs. She also finished the season ranked 31st in the national for RBI's.
"Hayley has performed well in her two years here," said Potts. "It's good to see that her hard work and determination has been rewarded."
Two Lady Tigers made the Second Team All-ICAA. Katie Mangold (Kearneysville, WV) held the Second Team infielder spot while Lise Couturier (Orleans, ON, Canada) grabbed one of the three pitching spots.
Mangold finished with a team best Batting Average (.379), Doubles (13), and On Base Percentage (.425). She can also be found in the top 5 in Slugging Percentage (.593), Runs Scored (58), Hits (55), RBI's (27), Runs Scored (28), Home Runs (6), and Total Bases (86).
Pitcher Lise Couturier paced the Lady Tigers with 11 wins in 2012. She finished with an ERA of 5.61 and held opponents to a .301 batting average. She registered 92 strikeouts (26 looking) in 144.1 innings pitched.
"Lise and Katie have also put in a lot of effort in their time at SIU," continued Potts. "Both of them are great leaders and are players I can rely on to come through in tough situations."
ICAA champion Central Oklahoma led the way in the 2012 All-ICAA Softball awards. The Bronchos won 3 of the 4 top individual awards and had 6 All-ICAA First Team selections.
The ICAA is composed of NCAA Division II schools that are not in a conference. Softball members include Central Oklahoma, Lindenwood, Malone, Northeastern State, Notre Dame College, Oakland City, Palm Beach Atlantic, Salem International, Urbana, Ursuline and Washington Adventist.
Coach of the Year went to Genny Stidham of Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos were the ICAA champions and are currently 42-6. COU won the South Central Region II and will face Angelo State in a super regional, May 11-12. Stidham is 420-275-2 in 15 years with the Bronchos.
Player of the Year was Nathalie Timmermans of Central Oklahoma. The catcher had nine doubles and 21 home runs, scored 65 runs, drove in 63 runs, had a .957 slugging percentage and batted .443. Timmermans leads the country in runs and home runs per game and is third in total home runs.
Pitcher of the Year was shared by Mary Pippin of Palm Beach Atlantic and Rachael Steverson of Central Oklahoma. Pippin was 17-11 with 22 complete games and six shutouts, struck out 166 batters for a 2.10 ERA in 183 innings. Steverson was 21-4 with 14 complete games and six shutouts, struck out 94 batters for a 2.71 ERA in 147.3 innings.
Freshman of the Year went to Desi Givens of Malone. The infielder had 15 doubles and four home runs, scored 22 runs, drove in 28 runs, had a 728% slugging percentage and batted .466. Givens is ranked third in doubles per game and seventh in batting average.
